Satish Kumar a former Jain monk and peace and environment activist speaks about animal welfare and compassionate living in his new role as vice president of the RSPCA. Here is an section of his article -
” Punishment cannot work without education and education starts with not only words, telling young people to take care of animals and be kind, but with example. At the moment our society thinks humans should behave nicely to humans and that you can behave badly to animals, but it’s the same mindset- if you kill or beat or treat an animal badly you will treat humans badly. So violence has to be eradicated altogether- you have to repair that habit.
Every human being has the potential to be compassionate and every human being has the potential to be cruel. So our job is to nurture the compassionate and surpress and try to eradicate to potential to be cruel.”
